The point guard is a potential NBA lottery pick and had been rising up several draft boards across the country. In NBC Sports Washington’s latest mock draft, he slots in with the No. 7 overall pick, which is currently occupied by the Washington Wizards.
Haliburton’s jump this season saw him double his shot attempts per game and saw his production duplicate as well. He averages 15.2 points per game on 11 shot attempts while shooting 50% from the field as a guard and 42% from behind the arc. Throw in 6.5 assists a contest and this is one of the best do-it-all point guards in the country.
As the leading scorer on a poor Iowa State team, it took him a while to gain footing among scouts’ evaluations. But once he gained traction, it was hard not to love the playmaking ability that he brings.
For the Wizards, or any other team for that matter, he would be a great addition. At 6-5, he brings the quickness of John Wall but has the length, defensive skills, pass-first mentality and finishing ability at the rim of Lonzo Ball. The only gripe on Haliburton is his release motion which has been compared to Shawn Marion.
He could fit with the Wizards as either a backup for Wall when he returned from injury or as a worst-case scenario, the starter with a knack for setting up his teammates. It’s a win-win scenario for Washington if he is still available at No. 7 and the Wizards don’t rise as they make a playoff push. Either way, there isn’t a better player at that position who would be available at No. 7 in the draft.
The injury should not affect his draft status too much. He’s a right-handed shooter so it should not be a worry for NBA teams. One could argue that he won’t get the opportunities to prove himself in late-season games. However, with two of the prospects ahead of him sitting out the rest of the competitive season, this is not abnormal in this year’s draft.
