NBA Rumors: Celtics reportedly made several strong offers to Wizards for Davis Bertans

Davis Bertans was one of the most sought-after bench upgrades on the trade market this season, and now that the trade deadline has come and gone, he remains in Washington D.C.

Tommy Sheppard said in mid-December that despite the interest in Bertans and his upcoming free agency, the Wizards intended to keep him. They’ve stuck to that plan, even though Danny Ainge and the Celtics apparently tried hard to acquire the Latvian Laser.

According to Chris Mannix, the Celtics made several strong offers to the Wizards for Bertans, but Washington wouldn’t budge. They remain committed to a core of Bertans, Bradley Beal and John Wall

The Wizards’ reported asking price for Bertans was two first-round picks as of a few hours before the trade deadline. The Celtics had plenty of draft assets to get the deal done, owning three first-rounders in the 2020 draft alone. Boston could have offered two firsts and perhaps Enes Kanter for Bertans, but it appears nothing Ainge could give swayed Sheppard.

Now the focus will shift to this summer. Bertans will be an unrestricted free agent, able to sign wherever he wants. Few teams have considerable cap space after clubs spent over $3 billion combined in free agency last year, so the fact the Wizards own Bertans’ bird rights is more of an advantage than usual.

Whether you wanted the Wizards to trade Bertans or not, Wall has to be happy the Wizards held on to Bertans and plan to re-sign him. Earlier this week, Wall endorsed Bertans as one of the most impressive Wizards this season and how he can’t wait to play with him and Beal at the same time.

«I think it’s very amazing if I get the opportunity to have him and Brad on both ends at one time,» Wall said.

If everything goes according to plan, Wizards fans should be in store for an exciting offense for the 2020-21 campaign.
