For the first time since its inception in 1913, the U.S. Open Cup will not be played.

This announcement ends a 106-consecutive-year run of a competition that declared a national soccer champion since 1914. The tournament had survived the often disjointed and confusing existence that had been soccer in America, which was barren of the convenience of the century-long continuity of leagues such as Major League Baseball, National Football League and National Hockey League. The first U.S. Open Cup (originally known as the National Challenge Cup and now officially known as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) kicked off in 1913, seven years before the formation of the NFL and 12 years after the opening season of baseball’s American League.
