The Knicks announced on Saturday that they signed guard Brandon Knight to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Later in the in afternoon, however, the Knicks announced that Knight, Aamir Sims, and MJ Walker have been waived.
Sources confirmed to SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley that Brandon Goodwin will also be waived. The Athletic was first to report that those four players were being cut.
SNY sources tell Begley that there was an expectation prior to today’s cuts that Knight, Goodwin, Sims and Walker would all play for the G League Westchester Knicks.
Each player is a free agent and can sign with any franchise, but the idea when they signed was to have them play for Westchester, per Begley.
Meanwhile, Wayne Selden is expected to remain on the roster.
The 29-year-old Knight last played for the Detroit Pistons during the 2019-20 season, averaging 11.6 points and 4.2 assists per game over nine games (three starts) with the team. He also played 16 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2019-20 season, but was traded to Detroit at the deadline. He averaged just 4.9 points over 15.1 minutes per game with the Cavs.
Knight was originally selected by the Pistons with the No. 8 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. As a freshman, he averaged 17.3 points in 38 games and set the Kentucky freshman record for points (657), three-pointers made (87), and 20-point games (14) on the way to a Final Four appearance. He went on to earn NBA All-Rookie First Team honors after averaging 12.8 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game over 66 games during the 2011-12 NBA season.
He was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks before the start of the 2013-14 season, and played there for the next season and a half. Knight was then traded to the Phoenix Suns on Feb. 19, 2015, and eventually re-signed with them on a five-year, $70 million deal in the offseason. He averaged a career-high 19.6 points per game in Phoenix during the 2015-16 season over 52 games, before having season-ending sports hernia surgery. Knight started only five games out of the 54 he played the following year, and then missed the entire 2017-18 season with a torn ACL.
Over eight seasons in the NBA with five teams, he’s averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game over 446 contests.
Knight played for the Brooklyn Nets Summer League team this past offseason as he tried to get back into the league.
The Knicks roster now officially stands at 16 players, including one two-way player, but when Goodwin is officially waived, that number would drop to 15.
