Featherweight Chris Zavala tests positive for COVID-19, withdraws from Eddie Vazquez fight

Featherweight contender Chris Zavala has been forced to withdraw from his June 16 bout against Eddie Vazquez after testing positive for COVID-19. The two were scheduled to face off on the undercard of the fight between Joshua Greer Jr. and Mike Plania at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Zavala (6-0, 3 KOs) was infected by one of his sparring partners, according to his trainer Manny Robles Jr.

«All three of the kids that were sparring one another, we have quarantined them. Chris was the last one to test positive,» Robles told ESPN.

Top Rank pulled Zavala from the card as soon as Robles told them of the positive test. The gym where they were training has been completely sprayed down and disinfected, and no one who has tested positive is allowed to return without first testing negative. Robles himself has tested negative.

Vazquez (7-0, 1 KO) isn’t sick, but he won’t be able to fight. Due to travel and quarantine restrictions, there’s no way to secure a new opponent for him, which means the bout is canceled. He penned a disappointed post on Instagram, but did say that ESPN has guaranteed him a spot in July.

Zavala is the second boxer to test positive for COVID-19 since Top Rank solidified its plans to put on a fan-free summer boxing series in Vegas. Rising junior lightweight Mikaela Mayer tested positive last Sunday and was pulled off of the premiere of Top Rank’s boxing series on Tuesday.
